Antique Fair in Washington County

On Sunday, we took a ride out to this antique fair. We hate antiques and pretty much, anything OLD! We don't appreciate all the chips on the furniture, the marks of wear and tear and buying things that should have been pitched decades ago. Of course, we understand why some do like them due to their design and original style. But, not us. I think it stems from having children. We, as parents, love looking at things that have not been cracked, dropped, or damaged by children who, had they given a crap for just one second, it wouldn't be damaged. But, if we went into their rooms and dropped their ipods from mid-air, we'd probably be arrested. That said, we arrived and began looking around.

First you notice that smell. It's never good, like an old library book is...it's dust and lack of cleaning, I think. We walked along and checked some things out, we even actually touched a few items...I know...I couldn't believe it myself.

I will say that it provided a wonderful walk down memory lane for us both. We saw dishes the same designs as the ones we ate our dinner from as small children. I saw a dish with the same design that I had sat in front of as a child and had refused to eat my dinner. I recall sitting there for a very long time until I ended up eating that horrible food ice cold, which as we all know, only made it taste even worse. I saw bowls that were like the ones that my children's grandmother had for her cake baking. I noticed a coffee pot much like the one my mom had used when I was a child. And, then I saw them, those stupid dishes (that as a poor and large family) my mom would get each friday when she did her grocery shopping at our local Thorofare market. We had lots of those at home. They were this horrible dark brown color with this green coloring on the edges that literally looked like someone vomited on them. Yep, they did. I hated those dishes. To me they were equal to Velvetta cheese, another item I hate. Yes, these dishes were the ceramic version of Velvetta cheese to me! But, mom got them each and every week, as if they were gold. Turns out, lots of people did, because those ugly plates were all over this antique fair!

My husband noticed this very old window with a sign. It looked like it had been part of an institution. It said, "ASYLUM FOR THE INSANE" and underneath that it said "Evaluation Center." Years ago in our area there was an institution that the kids called the nut house. It is long closed down. We were thinking perhaps it came from there.

I snapped a picture of it with my cell phone because I really got a good laugh out of it. There are many days that I feel like I am one of the heads of our nut house....so this seemed to fit in very well.

At the end of our visit, we, of course, did not buy anything....remember...it's all OLD! But, we did enjoy our nice long walk thru it, thinking back about those dishes and that great laugh we shared at that nut house sign. Well worth the drive I think!
